Spirito pionieristico ed architettura pre-bellica
L’indomabile spirito pionieristico di Darwin è rintracciabile anche negli edifici in pietra tuttora presenti in città, quali Browns Mart, Government House, il carcere di Fanny Bay Gaol e la Burnett House. In quest’ultima, potrete gustare il tradizionale “Tè delle Cinque”, elegante e squisito.
Storie di sopravvivenza
Darwin e le isole Tiwi subirono feroci attacchi nemici durante il corso della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e nel 1942 molta parte di Darwin fu distrutta. Numerosi, oggi, i luoghi che testimoniano i momenti storici legati a quel periodo, quali gallerie destinate al deposito di benzina, bunker, cimiteri e musei.
Il Ciclone Tracy
Lentamente ricostruita nell’immediato dopoguerra, Darwin fu nuovamente devastata nel 1974, quando fu colpita dalla forza distruttrice del ciclone Tracy che fece 71 vittime e distrusse la maggior parte delle costruzioni. Molto interessante risulta a questo proposito una visita al Museum and Gallery of the Northern Territory, una vesta sezione del quale è dedicata ad una mostra multimediale su questo argomento.
Immigrazione e lavoro
Data la sua posizione, Darwin è da sempre uno snodo aereo di grande importanza per tutta l’Australia. Nel 1870, la linea telegrafica dell’Overland Telegraph raggiunse Darwin e la scoperta dell’oro nella vicina zona di Pine Creek richiamò una grande quantità di lavoratori non solo da tutta l’Australia ma anche da tutto il mondo, gettando le basi di quel multiculturalismo che caratterizza oggi Darwin appunto.

Pioneering spirit & pre-war architecture
Darwin’s pioneering and pre-war history endures in the city’s surviving buildings: visit the early pioneers’ stone buildings – Browns Mart, Government House and the Fannie Bay Gaol – before moving on to pre-war Troppo architecture and high tea at Burnett House.
Surviving on the frontline
Darwin and the Tiwi Islands felt the full force of World War II, and in 1942 much of Darwin was destroyed. The region’s wartime heritage, and the lives lost, is remembered at heritage sites around Darwin, including bunkers, oil storage tunnels, cemeteries and museums.
Cyclone Tracy
Having been rebuilt after the war, Darwin was devastated again in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy struck, killing 71 people and wiping out most of the city’s buildings. The memory of Tracy is still strong in the city, and there’s a breathtaking display of the cyclone’s impact at the Museum and Gallery of the Northern Territory.

A transport hub from the early days of European settlement, Darwin has a proud aviation history, and has long been a major Australian gateway to the world. In the 1870s the Overland Telegraph Line and the gold rush in Pine Creek drew workers from all over the world, introducing a multiculturalism that continues to enrich the region today.
