Una storia ricca d’oro…
L'ultima corsa all’oro australiana ebbe luogo esattamente qui intorno al 1930, e la località di Tennant Creek fu battezzata per questo il “Cuore d’oro” del Northern Territory. Potrete oggi intraprendere un tour sotterraneo nella miniera di Battery Hill, che ospita l’ultima macchina utilizzata per forgiare i bossoli.
Al piccolo museo Tuxworth-Fullwood (nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale utilizzato come ospedale da campo) potrete ammirare manufatti in oro e oggetti vari risalenti a quel fiorente periodo.
Interessanti gli edifici in pietra della stazione del telegrafo, costruita nel 1872; essa serviva a collegare questa remota parte d’Australia con Darwin e, da qui, con il resto del mondo.
Grande influenza culturale aborigena
All’interessantissimo ed innovativo Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre di Tennant Creek, avvicinatevi alla storia di “Nyinkka”, il rettile dalla coda spinosa che diede origine alla località odierna. Presso lo stesso centro, trovate una bellissima galleria d’arte dove ammirare o acquistare interessanti manufatti (dipinti e altro) aborigeni.
Presso il Winanjjikari Music Centre si produce oggi musica contemporanea aborigena e, se siete fortunati, potrete assistere alla registrazione in diretta di alcuni brani originali composti dagli artisti locali.
Luogo sacro
Visitate il luogo sacro (femminile) aborigeno dei “Pebbles” dedicato alla danza; è una bella formazione granitica appena fuori paese, chiamata “Kunjarra” dalla popolazione locale.
Puro relax
Portatevi l’occorrente per il picnic e recatevi al Lake Mary Ann, nelle alture degli Honeymoon Ranges. Qui farete il bagno in pace e tranquillità.
Vita da cowboy
Nel mese di ottobre, durante il festival annuale del Barkly Goldrush Campdraft Challenge, potrete osservare rodei, corse con le botti e tutte le attività legate alla vita dei mandriani.
