It is easy to underestimate the significance of the remote Tennant Creek Telegraph Station. Early travellers regarded it as a refuge from the harsh and unforgiving surroundings they had travelled through. Linesmen escaped the heat of the day on the cool verandah. Supplies came by camel train and travellers brought news and letters for the inhabitants.
The Overland Telegraph Line stretched 3,600 kilometres from Adelaide to Darwin. Completed in 1872, it was Australia's first telegraphic link to Britain through the colonial telegraph system.
The discovery of gold by a linesman in 1925 quickly led to the establishment of the Tennant Creek township. By 1935 a post office had been opened, which led to the closure of the telegraph station and ended an era of hospitality for travellers in the outback.
