Walk, swim, sail or fly to experience the region's dramatic landscapes, diverse wildlife and ancient heritage - this is the great outdoors.
If you live for adventure and love the great outdoors, you’ve found your spiritual home in the Northern Territory. Walk, swim, sail or fly to experience the region’s dramatic landscapes, diverse wildlife and ancient heritage, from vast red deserts, hidden waterholes and outback stations to plunging gorges, rocky outcrops and pristine white beaches.
The water’s edge
Cool off in a lush waterhole then stand under the spray of magnificent waterfalls in Kakadu. Calm the body and mind in the tropical hot springs of Katherine or hit the beaches around Darwin for a swim in aqua waters beneath sandstone cliffs.
Prefer to stay above the water? Make the most of the countless boating and sailing opportunities on offer. Kayak through towering gorges, spot saltwater crocs on a river tour, or sail through ancient mangroves and see a startling array of wildlife including crocodiles, dugongs and river dolphins.
Whatever your specialty, there are plenty of fishing opportunities for rookies and pros alike. Head out for some deep sea fishing off the coast, reel in barramundi in the tidal rivers of Arnhem Land, or cast a line in the billabongs of Kakadu.
Overland and the Outback
From overnight treks, spectacular train journeys and week long road trips to camel rides, motorbike tours and hot air balloon rides, there are plenty of ways to traverse the rugged landscapes of the territory.
Take an afternoon walk to see ancient Aboriginal rock art at Ubirr in Kakadu National Park, and then climb the summit to watch the sun set over the floodplains below. Journey through the West MacDonnell Ranges in a four wheel drive and take in the stunning views from Kings Canyon on the way. Alternatively, hop on board The Ghan then catch a ride on a hot air balloon or helicopter to see the iconic Uluru from above.
