Katherine & Surrounds

Map showing the Katherine and Surrounds region in the NT

Come to where the Outback meets the tropics and discover a region full of gorges and misty waterfalls, thermal springs and ancient cultures.

Nature comes alive at Katherine Gorge as you cruise, canoe or fly along the Gorge by helicopter. Take a more challenging route and hike the Jatbula Trail, or soak it up in luxury at Cicada Lodge.

Learn from the land at Tom Curtain’s Katherine Outback Experience or get a hands-on perspective of indigenous culture with the Top Didj Aboriginal Cultural Experience; both just minutes from the centre of Katherine.

Forget your early morning ocean dip... wild swimming for the win 🙌 Located 40 minutes' drive from #Katherine, in the western area of Nitmiluk National Park, Edith Falls (Leliyn) has plunge-worthy places coming out of its ears 💦 With a lower pool and upper pool, along with Sweetwater Pool, you're certainly spoiled for choice here! @saltythebus recently set their alarms and watched the sun come up from the upper pool, easily reached via the 2.6 kilometre Leliyn Trail loop walk. If you're keen to do the same, there's a grassy campground and kiosk near the car park. Water you waiting for?! 😉 Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, Madie and Mark. #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

“Couldn’t have found a Bitter place for a sunrise swim..." said @imlukemackenzie after a recent visit to Bitter Springs 😜 These crystal clear hot springs are located in Elsey National Park, just two kilometres from #Mataranka and a one-hour drive south of #Katherine. The colours of this spot are almost edible, with decadent turquoise blues from the springs set against the alluring green foliage of surrounding tropical woodlands. Feel like a float? Bring your noodle then walk up from the first entry point to enjoy a short and relaxing natural ride down the stream. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, Luke! #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

Nothing puts a spring in your step like the crystal clear waters of Bitter Springs! Rather inappropriately named for such a sweet spot, this sandy-bottomed lagoon has startlingly turquoise water 💦💙 Located an hour south of #Katherine in Elsey National Park, the natural spring-fed stream is wonderfully warm and surrounded by tropical woodlands. You'll float fancy-free a couple of hundred metres downstream before reaching a ladder at the end, where you can hop out and do it all over again! Our tip: Bring a swimming noodle - it makes the experience even more relaxing 👌 Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @overlandtravellers. #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd

Gorge on adventure in @VisitKatherine! 😉 Hop in a canoe at Nitmiluk (#Katherine) Gorge and paddle down the ancient river system, spotting wildlife, hidden waterfalls and Aboriginal rock art. All canoe adventures begin with a scenic journey by boat through the first gorge before canoeists take to the waters to explore the second gorge and beyond. With dramatic cliffs extending more than 70 metres high in some parts, you'll be blown away by this magnificent maze of waterways 😍 @NitmilukTours offer a number of ways to experience this special spot, located 30 minutes' drive from the township of #Katherine. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @_lojo17! #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #NitmilukNT

This photo makes us want to officially put our ‘out of office' on! There’s nothing better than relaxing in a spa bath, and they don’t come much better than the free natural hot springs in the town of #Katherine. Crystal clear and luke warm, surrounded by lush pandanus and monsoon forest, the pools are a firm favourite with locals and travellers alike. If you're keen for a post-swim snack, you can grab a coffee and something to eat at the @poprocketcafe, located close by. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @globe_.jpg! #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

Forget the water parks, ditch the public swimming pools, and bid farewell to your sprinkler. It's time to experience wild swimming 🙌 If you’re looking to chase a waterfall that comes with unparalleled beauty and earns you all the bragging rights, then you've come to the right place! Enter 👉 Edith Falls' Upper Pool (Leliyn). While the main pool at the base of the falls is a real beauty, it's definitely well worth wandering up to this lesser known upper pool via the 2.6 kilometre Leliyn loop walk. You might just have it all to yourself 👌 Located only 40 minutes' drive north of #Katherine in Nitmiluk National Park, Edith Falls has a grassy campground along with a small kiosk if you're keen to stick around and explore more. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia, @kimberleyadventures! #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd #VisitKatherine

It’s not hard to see why Nitmiluk (#Katherine) Gorge is a Top End must do! The gorge-ous views and breathtaking walking tracks will impress even the most adventurous of hearts, or maybe you’ll choose to take it easy on a boat cruise with @NitmilukTours 👌 Open year round, the region is home to some of the most stunning gorge scenery in the NT. Consisting of 13 separate gorges, this maze of waterways stretches for 12 kilometres and extends more than 70 metres high. Get your camera ready - we're flying over Edith Falls (Leliyn)! Located roughly 60 kilometres from #Katherine in Nitmiluk National Park, Edith Falls (Leliyn) rewards those up for a hike. The main pool at the base of the falls is beautiful, but it’s also well worth hiking to the upper pool via the 2.6 kilometre Leliyn loop walk. It ticks all the boxes for Top End swimming heaven: a plunge pool you could swim in for hours; mesmerising rock formations and a scenic walking trail 🙌 Edith Falls has a grassy campground along with a small kiosk if you're keen to stay and explore the area, including the longer Sweetwater Pool hike.
