Katherine & Surrounds

Map showing the Katherine and Surrounds region in the NT

Come to where the Outback meets the tropics and discover a region full of gorges and misty waterfalls, thermal springs and ancient cultures.

Nature comes alive at Katherine Gorge as you cruise, canoe or fly along the Gorge by helicopter. Take a more challenging route and hike the Jatbula Trail, or soak it up in luxury at Cicada Lodge.

Learn from the land at Tom Curtin’s Katherine Outback Experience or get a hands-on perspective of indigenous culture with the Top Didj Aboriginal Cultural Experience; both just minutes from the centre of Katherine.

Beat the Monday blues with a visit to Southern Rockhole in Nitmiluk (#Katherine) Gorge! This glorious waterfall only flows for a limited time during the year... talk about exclusive! The rockhole can be reached by an 8 kilometre (return) walk from the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre, along the Windolf trail (via Yambi walk). If you're not keen on walking, you can choose to swap the hike for a ferry ride, which brings you within 150 metres of the swimming hole and waterfall. Nothing puts a spring in your step like the crystal clear waters of Bitter Springs! Rather inappropriately named for such a sweet spot, this sandy-bottomed lagoon has startlingly turquoise water 💦💙 Located an hour south of #Katherine in Elsey National Park, the natural spring-fed stream is wonderfully warm and surrounded by tropical woodlands. You'll float fancy-free a couple of hundred metres downstream before reaching a ladder at the end, where you can hop out and do it all over again! With goggles you might see freshwater turtles swimming through the reeds, and loads of fish darting about. Cheers for tagging #NTaustralia @offgridmonkey 👍  #SeeAustralia #TourismTopEnd

When the view is so incredible that you need to sit down and take it all in 🙌 The walks around Nitmiluk (#Katherine) Gorge range from easy one to five kilometre walks to serious full day and overnight hikes. They take you to stunning lookouts, secluded swimming holes and waterfalls, through palm filled valleys and over rocky escarpments. As @irinadan_ discovered, the 8.4 kilometre return Windolf walk is well worth your while, offering sweeping views of the first gorge from Pat's Lookout, along with seasonal swimming at Southern Rockhole down below - perfect for cooling off mid-hike.
