If you’re heading to the tropical Top End, you’re not here for theme parks and shopping centres. You’re here for croc cruises, waterfall swims and landscapes that feel bigger than your plans.

The best part? You don’t need a huge budget to experience it. With a bit of flexibility and a sense of adventure this is a route that delivers. Here’s your ultimate day by day backpacker itinerary through Darwin, Litchfield, Kakadu, Katherine and beyond.

Tropical sunsets, street art and balmy air, Darwin is the ideal hub to begin your Top End adventure. With daily flight connections, easy hire car options and everything within reach, it’s the perfect place to find your rhythm and ease into the laid-back tropical lifestyle ahead.

Morning

Start with a self-guided street art walk through the city. Large scale murals from the Darwin Street Art Festival bring colour to laneways and make exploring on foot effortless.

Drop into Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (free entry) to enjoy the air conditioning, and learn about Cyclone Tracy’s impacts, explore powerful First Nations art and see Sweetheart, the preserved 5m crocodile who remains one of Darwin’s most famous residents.

Afternoon

Cool off at the Darwin Waterfront with a swim in the free recreation lagoon, then choose from a wide range of waterfront eateries for lunch. From Mexican and Asian flavours to a classic pub meal, there’s something to suit every appetite.

Evening

As golden hour arrives, Darwin gives you options:

  • Ease into sunset with a drink and waterfront views at Lola’s Pergola or the Darwin Ski Club
  • Grab takeaway or pack a picnic and find a sunset spot along Nightcliff Foreshore or Cullen Bay
  • When the night calls, head to Mitchell Street to meet other travellers and dance into the evening or grab a ticket to a live event and see where the night takes you. Darwin’s events calendar is always evolving, so check what’s on and shape your plans around it.

Base yourself right in the action with a stay at Youth Shack Backpackers or MOM Darwin on Mitchell Street, where Darwin’s nightlife, bars and buzz are all on your doorstep.

Morning

Slow your morning and follow the locals to one of the city’s vibrant markets. Depending on the day, you might find yourself lining up for laksa at the Parap Village Markets (Saturday mornings), browsing tropical fruit and street food at Rapid Creek Markets (Saturday and Sunday mornings), or just relaxing at one of Darwin’s many cafés.

Then check the tides and take a wander along the Mangrove Boardwalk at East Point Reserve. This easy 1.2km walk weaves through lush mangroves, home to all kinds of fascinating intertidal wildlife.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, book a 00Seven Jet Ski Adventure and skim Darwin’s unspoilt coastline at thrilling speeds. Feel the adrenaline kick in and turn your afternoon into something seriously unforgettable.

Evening

Experience a spectacular Darwin sunset at Mindil Beach, where the sky lights up in rich hues over the Arafura Sea. As the sun dips, wander through the vibrant Mindil Beach Sunset Market, held from late April to late October on Thursday and Sunday evenings.

Browse stalls packed with local art, handmade goods and souvenirs, then follow the smell of sizzling street food, from laksa to fresh seafood and tropical sweets. Grab a plate, claim your spot on the sand and soak in the sunset, then wander back through the markets for live music and a buzzing evening atmosphere.

Morning

Start the morning with breakfast from one of Darwin’s top breakfast spots before you head out of town.

Just 90 minutes south of Darwin, you’ll arrive at your waterfall hopping paradise, Litchfield National Park.

If you’re travelling via Cox Peninsula Road, consider stopping at the crystal-clear Berry Springs Nature Park on the way. A popular destination for picnics and refreshing dips.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon at Wangi Falls a huge plunge pool with twin falls. After a refreshing dip, embark on a 1.6km moderate loop walk over the top of the waterfall.

The café at Wangi Falls has outdoor undercover seating for customers and serves a range of hot and cold food. There are also gas barbeques available and grassy picnic areas to enjoy.

Evening

Stay overnight, campgrounds, van sites and nearby stays make it easy to stretch the experience into 2 days.

If you’ve got a 4WD, venture further:

Morning

Wake up early and make your way to the Cascades. The swimming area can be accessed via the upper Cascades walk (3.3km loop in the dry season and 3.6km return in the wet season). This walk takes you up onto the Tabletop Plateau where several lookouts have sweeping views of the lowlands below. Be crocwise and swim only in designated areas at all of the swimming areas in Litchfield National Park especially when travelling during the wet season.

Afternoon

Take an easy 3.2 km walk between Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole, following the shaded trail along Florence Creek. Cool off with a swim in one of the crystal-clear pools along the way.

Evening

Camp for the night at the 2WD or 4WD campgrounds at Florence Falls, located within an easy walk to Florence Falls. The campground has showers, toilets, barbeques and cooking facilities.

Morning

Get on the road early today for a busy day exploring. Before you leave Litchfield National Park call into the Magnetic Termite Mounds standing up to 2m high on a wide flood plain. Marvel at these impressive structures with their thin edges pointing north-south and broad backs facing east-west.

Today you’ll travel around 315km to the dual World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park. This is where the scale expands. Ancient rock art, dramatic escarpments and wildlife encounters shape each day. A Kakadu National Park pass is required.

Along the way stop in and experience a jumping crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River. See saltwater crocodiles close up in their natural habitat.

Begin your Kakadu adventure at Bowali Visitor Centre to plan your walks, activities and learn about the landscapes and wildlife you’re about to discover. Kakadu is vast and distances between sites can be considerable, so it is worth stopping in to prepare and make sure you’re well equipped before heading out to explore.

Afternoon

From here, continue to Cahills Crossing for a chance to spot crocodile feeding on the fish from the viewing deck. Peak time to view the action is September – October.

Next stop is Ubirr, home to some of the world’s most outstanding rock art and a key reason for Kakadu’s dual World Heritage status. Wander through ancient rock art galleries and one of the most iconic views over the Nadab floodplain. Climb up the escarpment and stay for the sunset over the floodplain

Evening

Enjoy a peaceful night under a sky full of stars in Kakadu National Park. With a range of camping options to suit every style, you can settle in at Aurora Kakadu Lodge Camping and Caravan Park, unwind among lush surrounds at Anbinik Kakadu Resort, or experience a more traditional bush stay at Merl Campground.

Whether you’re after creature comforts or a back-to-basics escape, Kakadu offers the perfect place to switch off, slow down, and soak up the magic of the Territory.

Morning

Rise early for big day of walks, billabongs and culture. A visit to Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) is a must when travelling to Kakadu. The walk will take you through through powerful rock art sites and provide spectacular views of the escarpment.

Located 1.5km from Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) is Nawurlandja lookout, a great place to to watch the colours shift across the ancient rock formation. This is also a great location to view the sunrise or sunset. If visiting during the dry season take an easy walk around Anbangbang Billabong.

Afternoon

Arrive at Cooinda and visit the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre an interactive museum and cultural space that shares the history of Aboriginal culture in Kakadu.

Evening

Stop for the night at Cooinda Lodge or Ngurrungurrudjba (Yellow Water) Campground & Caravan Park and enjoy the extensive facilities and resort style pool. Book into a sunset cruise and watch the Yellow Water Billabong come alive. For something more secluded, Mardukal campground offers seasonal campsites with showers and toilets.

If you have more time to explore and have a 4WD add on a visit to:

  • Jim Jim Falls - dramatic escarpment cliffs and a deep plunge pool
  • Twin Falls - flows side by side through a striking sandstone gorge into a tranquil plunge pool. The Twin Falls Escarpment Walk is both challenging and spectacular.

Morning

Today you’ll be heading to Katherine. If you have a 4WD, choose to stop at either:

  • Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) - short hike to a crystal-clear plunge pool beneath towering rock walls (4WD access, seasonal)
  • Gunlom Falls - famous infinity-style rock pools at the top (4WD access, seasonal).
  • Motor Car Falls - moderate to difficult hike to a small pristine waterfall surrounded by monsoon forest (4WD access, seasonal).

Afternoon

Arrive at Leliyn (Edith Falls), a favourite for its series of cascading pools and scenic walking tracks. Open almost year-round, it’s one of the most underrated waterfalls in the Territory.

Evening

Stay the night at Leliyn (Edith Falls), where a shaded campground offers a relaxed base surrounded by nature. With showers, a camp kitchen and a café on site, it’s an easy and comfortable spot to unwind after a day of exploring.

Morning

Today you’ll travel into the heart of Nitmiluk National Park, a place to stretch your legs, get out on the water and settle into vast, open gorge country. Spend the day exploring Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge.

Join a boat cruise to learn more about Jawoyn Country and the deep cultural significance of this incredible landscape, or hire a canoe and paddle your way through the first gorge at your own pace.

Afternoon

Head up to Baruwei Lookout for sweeping views over the gorge, especially magical as the sun sets and the cliffs glow in warm, golden light.

Evening

Settle in for the night at Nitmiluk Campground or swap the swag for a little extra comfort in the nearby Nitmiluk Cabins, just moments from the iconic Nitmiluk Gorge.

Unwind with a dip in the pool, then kick back with a meal and a drink at Jatti Pool Bar & Bistro, the perfect way to end a day exploring the Top End.

Morning

Start your morning with some breakfast at the Nitmiluk Café. Then head into Katherine and take a dip at the Katherine Hot Springs, a series of warm spring fed pools surrounded by tropical greenery. Have a bite to eat or a coffee at the Pop Rocket Café, located near the parking area at Katherine Hot Springs.

Afternoon

Located 27km south of Katherine are the Cutta Cutta Caves, open seasonally from April until the end of October. Book a tour with a local guide and delve 15m below the surface to discover amazing limestone caves in the heart of Australia’s Top End.

Next stop is Mataranka. Finish your Top End trip the slow way, floating through warm, palm lined waters is the perfect reset after days on the road.

  • Mataranka Thermal Pool - float beneath towering palms in warm, crystal clear waters at one of the Territory’s most iconic thermal pools.
  • Bitter Springs - drift gently along a palm lined natural spring where the current carries you through clear turquoise water.

Evening

Spend the night camping in Mataranka. The Mataranka Homestead offers tasty meals and warm welcomes. As the sun sets, you’ll be treated to a star-studded sky and the kind of peace and quiet that can only be found in the Outback.

Continue to the Outback, where desert landscapes and star filled skies take over, offering a whole new chapter of the Territory to explore.
