Red Centre Way

Take in the icons and explore further on an unforgettable road trip along the Red Centre Way from Alice Springs to Uluru.

Drive the 1135 kilometre loop from Alice Springs and explore the vast and diverse landscapes of the Red Centre. Discover the natural beauty of Uluru,  Kata Tjuta and Watarrka/Kings Canyon – starting your trip in Alice Springs and travelling through the waterhole dotted stretch of the Tjoritja/West MacDonnell Ranges, including a short section of unsealed road. Or take the completely sealed 1750 kilometre loop if travelling by two-wheel drive.

To make the most of this incredible journey allow at least six days. See red desert sands, spinifex and mulga forest, lush valleys and towering gorges. Witness the red giants of the Outback change colour at sunset. Learn first-hand about the ancient living culture of the traditional Aboriginal land owners and visit the home of countless rare plants, birds and native wildlife.

Ochre and art

Take some time to explore the renowned galleries of Alice Springs, the Indigenous art capital of the country before driving west to the gorges, waterholes and ochre pits of the Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park.

Above and below

Kick off the day with a dip in the Redbank Gorge pools near Glen Helen. Travel on to Finke Gorge National Park to get a glimpse of the Red Centre’s ancient past at lush Palm Valley. Walk along the soaring red cliffs of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park and make your way down into a dense forest of palms, ferns and cycads on the canyon floor below.

The icons

Next stop is Australia’s most famous natural landmark. Standing 348 metres high, Uluru towers over the surrounding landscape. Take a camel ride at sunrise or sunset, jump in a helicopter to get an aerial view, dine under the stars or choose from one of the impressive walks within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

Lucky last

Travelling back to to Alice Springs, visit the 4,700 year-old meteorite craters at Henbury or for those with time to spare and travelling by 4WD – check out the sandstone bluffs and cliffs of Rainbow Valley before completing the journey.
