Savannah Way Victoria River region
Make your way through the Australian tropics from Cairns in Queensland, through the Northern Territory, and on to Broome in Western Australia.
Camp out under the stars, travel across changing tropical and savannah landscapes, and explore some of the 15 national parks and five World Heritage-listed areas along the way. Visit outback towns and see ancient rock art, take in the famous ‘Lost City’, or head off on a fishing trip to catch a famous barramundi – this is the Savannah Way.
Leave behind the rainforest and surf of the Cairns’ coast and head through World Heritage-listed Barron Gorge National Park to the NT border. Be sure to check out the volcanic geology of the Atherton Tablelands en route. Spend a day of fishing around the Sir Edward Pellew Islands and the mangrove-wetlands at the mouth of the McArthur River (remember to Be Crocwise). Turn inland to check out ancient Indigenous rock art at the Caranbirini Conservation Reserve and then marvel at the famous sandstone outcrops of the ‘Lost City’.
Soak in the thermal pools in the town of Mataranka, the setting for the famous Australian novel, We of the Never Never. Hit the four-wheel drive tracks and walking trails of Judburra/Gregory National Park to see boab trees and dramatic sandstone escarpments. Cross the border into Western Australia and make your way to Broome across the rugged and beautiful Kimberly region passing local highlights, Lake Argyle and the Bungle Bungles.
The Savannah Way is an incredible 3700 km journey that traverses rugged and challenging country. Plan your trip and take a four-wheel drive to make sure you're well-prepared for the adventure.
