Amye Un is renowned for many things, her larger-than-life personality, her iconic wooden spoon but above all else her incredible laksa served with Territory hospitality.

A love for Laksa

We don’t know exactly when or why it began, but Darwin’s love for laksa is intense. Perhaps it’s the city’s close proximity to Asia or its richly multicultural population. Whatever the reason, one thing is certain—this passion for the fragrant, spicy noodle soup isn’t going anywhere, and no one’s complaining.

At the heart of this laksa-loving city stands Amye, affectionately crowned the Laksa Queen. Her restaurant in Stuart Park is a local institution, cherished for its authentic flavours and warm hospitality. Amye’s playful confidence matches her culinary expertise.

I tell my customers, If no good, don’t pay. But if good, pay double.

A month long laksa festival

But Darwin’s love for laksa doesn’t stop there. Since 2018, the city has taken its devotion to the next level with the annual Darwin International Laksa Festival. Held every November, this month-long celebration highlights the best bowls of laksa from across the region, with local vendors competing for the coveted ‘Golden Bowl’. The festival also celebrates creativity with the 'Best Inspired Dish' category, showcasing innovative takes on laksa flavours—like the surprisingly delicious laksa ice cream.

The festival isn’t just about food—it’s a celebration of culture, community, and creativity. From vibrant street markets to live music and events, it brings together locals and visitors alike to honour this iconic dish.

Darwin’s market scene

Darwin’s vibrant food scene is about much more than just it’s legendary laksa. The city’s multicultural markets are a drawcard in their own right, with visitors coming from far and wide to soak up the flavours, sights, and smells.

The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are iconic for their stunning seaside location, while the Parap Markets and Nightcliff Markets are firm favourites for weekend mornings. Ask Amye, though, and she’ll tell you her top pick is the Rapid Creek Markets.

Open every Saturday and Sunday from 8AM to 2PM, the Rapid Creek Markets transport you straight to Asia. Wandering the stalls, you’ll find an incredible selection of tropical produce, Asian vegetables, market snacks, and local art—a feast for all your senses.

If you’re a foodie or a culture lover, Darwin’s markets are not to be missed. Whether you’re hunting for fresh flavours, local crafts or want to simply soak up the lively atmosphere, they’re a true reflection of the city’s rich diversity.

The gateway to nature

Darwin’s appeal reaches further than just its incredible food scene—it’s the tropical lifestyle that surrounds it. The city enjoys a never-ending summer, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and sunseekers. With lush national parks, serene swimming spots, and world-class fishing right at its doorstep, there’s always an adventure waiting. Whether you’re cooling off at Berry Springs, exploring the dramatic landscapes of Litchfield or Kakadu National Parks, or casting a line for barramundi in the pristine waterways, Darwin offers a unique blend of natural beauty and tropical relaxation. It’s a place where great food meets the great outdoors, creating an experience that nourishes both body and soul.
