Places to go in the NT

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is home to the world-famous Uluru (Ayers Rock), one of the country’s most famous natural landmarks. An iconic rock formation, this monolith stands at a towering 1,141 feet tall and has a circumference of over six miles, with the bulk of its mass lying underground. Not far from Uluru lies another rock formation bearing the other half of the national park’s name: Kata Tjuta. This incredible rock formation consists of 36 rock domes that can be viewed from afar or up-close on one of the hikes that meanders through the domes.

This unique slice of the outback is known for its amazing views at dawn and dusk. The Talinguṟu Nyakunytjaku viewing area offers uninterrupted 360° views of both Uluru and Kata Tjuta, with the sun’s glow bringing the surrounding desert landscape to life.

A trip to the Northern Territory is incomplete without getting to experience one of the many amazing Uluru tours on offer. See information on the AAT Kings Uluru tours page to learn more and to help you plan an unforgettable experience in the heart of Australia.

Alice Springs is flanked to the east and west by the rugged and ancient MacDonnell Ranges, which stretch for 400 miles either side of the town. Venture west of Alice Springs through the breathtaking desert terrain of the West MacDonnell Ranges and you’ll discover how over time, erosion has created incredible gorges and gaps along the ranges that are just waiting to be explored.

Standley Chasm is just one of many spectacular places to visit along the West MacDonnell Ranges. The narrow chasm, formed by rushing flood waters over thousands of years, cuts through quartzite rock to form a jagged walkway through the range. Wander through the chasm and as the light shifts across the divide, you’ll be treated to a magnificent display of colours like you’ve never seen before.

Further along experience the calming beauty of Simpsons Gap where water flows through a small gap in the ranges providing a sheltering haven for a range of flora and fauna. You’ll see beautiful ghost gum trees surrounding a permanent waterhole and if you’re lucky you’ll spot the elusive black footed rock wallabies hiding among the rocks.

With the kind of skill that comes from operating in Australia for more than a century, AAT Kings’ is an expert with efficient itineraries. The 15-day Outback Adventure tour traverses record-breaking canyons and gorges, national parks and World Heritage Sites. It’s naturally stunning; no wonder TV and movie directors find inspiration here! After starting in the south of the country it meanders to tropical Darwin where sunsets are as bright and complex as the characters that call it home.

Just one of many unique finds along this route is Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles). This is a collection of hundreds of boulders that vary in size, with some even as large as 20 feet high. These boulders have formed over millions of years and continue to crack and change over time. The boulders will change colour with the sunrise and sunset, so be sure to grab your camera and arrive at the perfect time.

If you’re looking for total immersion into the outback, and beautifully open skies this guided vacation is one for the books. Look more into guided holiday adventures and how you can save on trips like these on the AAT Kings website.
