Cyclingin the Northern Territory

See the landscape unfold at your own pace and on your own path, and earn serious bragging rights by travelling the Territory on two wheels.

The Territory is great for cycling; there are tracks and trails in national parks as well as urban areas, and plenty of highway for keen road cyclists.

Bike paths

Flat terrain and cycling paths make for easy, safe cycling in the Northern Territory’s towns. In Darwin, the popular cycle paths around East Point Reserve offer superb views overlooking Beagle Gulf, and in Alice Springs, popular rides include the trip from the town centre to the Telegraph Station and the full day ride out to Simpsons Gap.

Bike hire & tours

There are a number of tour companies and retail outlets in Darwin and Alice Springs offering guided cycling tours and bike hire (including mountain bikes) for self-guided rides. You may also find bikes are available for hire at your accommodation, and at some of the bigger attractions.

Road cycling

Hit the road and join the throngs of road cyclists pedalling their way along the Northern Territory’s highways. Road cycling is popular here – cyclists are a common sight on Territory roads. Contact local clubs for information about itineraries and events.

Off-road/mountain biking

Take the adrenaline up a notch and head off-road. Mountain biking is an ideal way to explore unsealed tracks across the Territory and in national parks, including Kakadu and Litchfield. Long-haul trips along the Gibb River Road and Tanami Track are an option for the keen and intrepid.

Road rules & safety

Make sure you’re familiar with local rules and safety before you go. Note that bicycle helmets are compulsory for cyclists travelling on roads in the Northern Territory and that cyclists have right of way on public roads and highways.
