Self-drive touring, Alice Springs

Explore the mighty MacDonnell Ranges or begin your epic journey across the whole continent – the trip of a lifetime starts in Alice Springs.

Alice Springs is not only the gateway to The Red Centre, it’s also a great hub for self-drive adventures – from the town of Alice Springs and exploring the MacDonnell Ranges to punctuating an epic journey across the whole continent.

Around town

There’s a reason this is Australia’s most famous outback town: when you take a rich history, a wealth of festivals, a big sense of community and identity, and put them all smack bang in the middle of an intense desert landscape, well, you’ll want to spend some quality time here.

Gemtree Caravan and Tourist Park

140 kilometres from town, the park itself is home to a huge range of wildlife. Pick up a map for scenic four-wheel drive routes and head further afield through the Harts and East MacDonnell Ranges. Alternatively, join a ‘tagalong’ tour, covering local indigenous history along with the stories of colonial pastoralists and miners.

Binns Track

Try the new 2191 kilometre four-wheel drive route across the outback. Intersecting Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, and crossing the western Simpson Desert, East MacDonnell Ranges, Davenport Ranges National Park and Gregory National Park, this is a truly epic exploration of Australia’s outback and well worth the effort.

Explorers Way

Taking you from Alice Springs to the top (or bottom) of the country, you’ll visit great natural wonders along the way like the Devils Marbles, Litchfield National Park, Nitmiluk National Park, Cutta Cutta Caves and Bitter Springs.

Red Centre Way

Discover the Australian outback and the world-renowned landmarks of Uluru/Ayers Rock, Kata Tjuta/The Olgas and Watarrka National Park, Kings Canyon on a four or five day adventure drive along the Red Centre Way out of Alice Springs.
