Your personal information

The Northern Territory Information Act (the Act) provides the community rights to access government information, including personal information, The Act also safeguards the privacy of personal information held by the relevant organisations and ensures that organisations collect and handle personal information responsibly.

In the Act, Personal Information is any information a public sector organisation holds from which a person’s identity is apparent or is reasonably able to be ascertained. Tourism NT is committed to protecting your personal information. We take all reasonable steps to prevent unauthorised access, misuse, loss, modification, or disclosure of your information.

Personal information is kept only for as long as it is needed for the purpose it was originally collected for. When the personal information is no longer needed for that purpose it will either be destroyed or all information capable of identifying an individual user will be permanently removed.

You can make a request to Tourism NT if you would like access and if applicable correct to any personal information held by Tourism NT about you. Access will be provided in accordance with applicable law. Information will be provided to you electronically, in a commonly used, machine readable format. If you request photocopies of documents or copies of photographs or other images, charges may apply.

Protecting your privacy

The Act provides remedies for breaches of privacy of an individual’s personal information. The Act contains 10 Information Privacy Principles that provide for the collection, use and disclosure, management and openness of personal information that Tourism NT deals with. Information on Privacy Principles

Privacy complaints

If you are concerned that your personal information has not been protected, or that Tourism NT has breached your privacy, you can make a complaint in writing, setting out your name and contact details, and the circumstances that lead you to believe that your privacy has been breached. Please provide as much detail as possible such as date, time, location of incidents, who did what, and the names and contact details of any witnesses.

Collection of information

Tourism NT generally collects, holds, uses and discloses the following personal information:

  • on internet users based on their interaction with websites and social media accounts owned or operated by Tourism NT, the NT Government or our partners, including but not limited to tourismnt.com.au, ntbusinessevents.com.au, and northernterritory.com;
  • on consumers provided to the organisation by the individual, a third party such as a travel agent, third party data providers, data from travel industry partnerships or from a marketing organisation;
  • on travel partners. Tourism NT endeavours to seek the consent of the individual or their company to collect, hold, use and disclose this information. If the requisite specific consent is obtained, this information may also be disclosed to Tourism NT’s tourism partners and
  • relating to the employment, development and management of departmental personnel and contractors.

When you interact with us, you may be asked to provide personal information. This may include:

Identity Information: Your name, username or similar identifier, date of birth and gender.

Contact Information: Your place of residence, email address and telephone numbers.

Transaction Information: Details about products and services you have purchased from Tourism NT or our travel industry partners such as airlines, online travel agents and booking sites, and may include date and time of purchase.

Technical Information: Internet protocol (IP) address, your login data, browser type and version, browser actions, time zone setting and location, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform and other technology on the devices you use to access this website.

Enquiry Information: Is data you provided us with when you contact us for customer service assistance (by any means of communication including written communications or via our website(s), support forums, telephone, email, SMS, or our social media channels) or when you visit us at a public event, such as a trade show or exhibition or participate in one of our surveys, competitions or prize draws, we may record all customer service communications and keep information about the particular communication, including your name, your business details, the reason why you contacted us, and the advice we gave you so we can track the resolution of any customer service issues and for customer service training purposes.

Profile Information: Username and password provided by you and information regarding interests and travel preferences. We may also collect additional personal information and data when you participate in activities such as online forums, web forms, quizzes, surveys and chat rooms; post information on bulletin boards or through social media; complete nomination and application forms; or request information via email.

Usage Information: Information about how you use our website, products and services, as well as the frequency and pattern of your service use.

Marketing and Communications Information: Preferences for receiving marketing from us and our third parties and your communication preferences.

Aggregated data

Aggregated data refers to numerical or non-numerical information collected from multiple sources, measurements, or individuals. It is compiled into summaries for various purposes like making comparisons, analysing trends, or generating statistics. For instance, we might aggregate your usage data to calculate the percentage of users who access a specific website feature.

We collect, use, and share anonymised aggregated data, such as statistical or demographic information. This data may be derived from your personal information, but providing it doesn’t directly or indirectly reveal your identity, it is not considered personal information under the law. However, if we combine or link anonymised aggregated data with your personal information in a way that makes it possible to identify you, the combined data will be treated as personal information and used in accordance with this Policy.

Information collected by Tourism NT is only for purposes related to its core functions and activities. Tourism NT’s core function is to market the Northern Territory as a travel destination.

Tourism NT may use personal information to provide direct communication through email, targeted and retargeted advertising, targeted personalised digital content, social media contacts or other means. Tourism NT will use information on internet usage for the purpose of targeting specific content to users for the purpose of marketing the Northern Territory as a travel destination. Where appropriate, Tourism NT will prominently provide a notice in each direct communication specifying how an individual can request to discontinue future direct marketing or market research communications, where a user has not opted out.

Tourism NT uses personal information for statistical purposes. Where information is used for statistical purposes, all information capable of identifying an individual user will be removed. Statistics compiled from personal information may be made public, however no information enabling identification of any individual will be included in such statistical material.

Tourism NT uses personal information to learn more about people using its websites and social media. Tourism NT may collect, collate, and analyse this information to better understand and target its users and audience. Tourism NT may use this information to specifically target messages to users.

IP addresses are used to analyse trends, administer the site, track users’ movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use. IP addresses are not linked to personally identifiable information.

  • Tourism NT commercial and corporate offices;

  • Travel industry partners such as airlines, online travel agents and booking sites;

Tourism NT will not disclose personal information for any reason other than the above situations without consent, unless disclosure is to prevent a threat to life or serious illness, required by law or for investigation proceedings of reasonably suspected unlawful activity.

If at any point Tourism NT decides to use personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time it was collected, all affected users will be notified. Users will have a choice as to whether their information is used in this manner.

Storage of data & international transfer

Tourism NT stores personal information securely both within and outside the Northern Territory.

For data stored outside the Northern Territory, we use MailChimp and Campaign Monitor, which are both compliant with the UK and EU GDPR through the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) incorporated into our agreement. MailChimp and Campaign Monitor are also both compliant with the Californian Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).

Under GDPR data protection laws, use of personal information and personal data must be based on one of a number of legal grounds and companies may process personal data only when the processing is permitted by the specific legal ground set out in the law.

Retention & deleting personal Information

Our retention periods for personal information are based on business needs and legal requirements. We retain personal information for as long as is necessary for the processing purpose(s) for which the information was collected, and any other permissible, related purpose.

When personal information is no longer needed (in accordance with the table above), we either securely destroy it, or irreversibly anonymise the data (and we may further retain and use the anonymised information).
