Old Timers Traeger Museum provides a history of settlement in Central Australia from First Nations peoples to the early days of immigrant settlement, and the coming of new enterprises and technology.

Displays describe early exploration which resulted in completion of the Overland Telegraph in the late 1800s and made possible expansion of pastoral and mining enterprises.

This museum holds a unique collection of articles related to life in Central Australia, including the indigenous groups who lived here as the first inhabitants. There is an extensive mineral collection, fossils, and Aboriginal tools and carvings, as well as exhibits relating to the development of transport and communications in the outback; the works of John Flynn and his promotion of the Royal Flying Doctor service and medical care throughout Central and Northern Australia are represented, and materials from the domestic life of pastoralists, drovers, cameleers and miners are on show.

The museum is situated in the grounds of the Old Timers Village, just South of Alice Springs CBD, and is run by volunteers. It opened in 1966 and was named after Alfred Traeger, inventor of the pedal radio, which made communications across the outback possible.

Visitors welcome by appointment outside regular hours.
