The Gulf region is known for its rivers, and this is strongly reflected in the drive through Limmen National Park, which crosses four major rivers and follows a fifth, the Roper River, for a while.
The park is popular with anglers and birdwatchers, and its diverse landscapes make for a varied and rewarding journey. You'll pass through woodlands, rivers, floodplains and billabongs, with short detours revealing even more.
Butterfly Springs is the only safe swimming spot in the park. It's located along Nathan River Road and features a shady campground. The Southern Lost City can be explored on a 2 km loop walk through spectacular leaning sandstone spires. The Western Lost City is reached via a 28 km 4WD track, and you'll need to collect a key from the Nathan River Ranger Station to access the gate. Be sure to visit the small Visitor Centre while you're there.
Make sure you have plenty of fuel, as there are no fuel stops between Roper Bar and Cape Crawford, a distance of 338 km.
Camping options range from the large Munbililla campground to more remote riverside sites. Fees apply, and all campsites must be booked online before your visit.
