4 days of fishing in the Top End The perfect way to spend a long weekend in Darwin

A long weekend is all it takes to fish some of the Top End’s best-known grounds. Base yourself in Darwin and fish 4 different locations in 4 days – Darwin Harbour, Mary River, Dundee Beach and a (bucket-list-worthy) flight to the Tiwi Islands.

This itinerary is built for a long weekend: fly in, fish hard, fly out. No wasted days.

Morning

Land in Darwin and head straight to Cullen Bay Marina for a half or full-day charter with Darwin Harbour Fishing Charters, Barramundi Adventures, Anglers Choice Fishing Safaris or Estuary Escapes. Some tours will even pick you up straight from your hotel.

If you’ve got access to your own boat, good-quality public ramps around the harbour include Dinah Beach, Nightcliff Beach, Vesteys Beach, East Arm, Middle Arm and the Elizabeth River. Tides matter here, most ramps need at least 2m of water, so time your launch and check conditions before heading out.

Afternoon

Work the artificial reefs at Fenton Patches, the Adelaide River Mouth, North Gutter and Lee Point, plus a handful of shipwrecks that also attract fish. Barra and juvenile golden snapper turn up consistently across the harbour’s 3 arms, and you can bottom-bounce for black jewfish most of the year. Between October and December, when conditions are calmest, trolling for sailfish and marlin is also on the cards.

Evening

Once your feet are back on dry land, settle into Darwin for the night. Head over to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market (Thursday–Sunday during the dry season) for a well-earned laksa on the beach. Alternatively, head to the Darwin Waterfront, where dining options range from laid-back pubs to waterfront fine dining.

Less than 2 hours from Darwin, the Mary River system is where serious barra hunters head – the perfect day trip from the city.

Morning

Head out early – tides are critical here, so time your departure around the top of the tide. Reel Screamin Barra Fishing are based at Shady Camp year-round, while Wildman Fishing and Estuary Escapes Fishing Charters run seasonally.

If you’re exploring at your own pace, Corroboree Billabong has a boat ramp opening onto 45km of fishable water and some of the best wildlife-watching in the Top End, while Shady Camp gives boat access to the mangrove-lined Sampan and Tommycut Creeks. Fishing dinghies are available to hire.

Afternoon

From February to May, big barra turn up trolling at the mouths of both creeks and along the Van Diemen Gulf coastline wherever there’s run-off into Chambers Bay. Mary River has less fishing pressure than spots closer to Darwin and a habitat barra genuinely thrive in – it’s one of the Territory’s most consistent barra hot spots.

Evening

Time your return trip around the tide, then head back into Darwin for a laid-back dinner at Stokes Hill Wharf – a handful of relaxed restaurants all side by side. You’ll find everything from fish and chips to modern Mexican.

Just 90 minutes’ drive from Darwin on a sealed road, Dundee Beach is where locals go for easy blue-water fishing.

Morning

Head down in the morning and launch from the boat ramp (check tide times, as they affect access). Boat hire is available with Dundee Beach Boat Hire. Dundee Beach Fishing Charters can help plan a trip around the tides.

If you’d prefer to focus on the fish and let someone else do the driving. Anglers Choice Fishing Safaris, Humbug Fishing and Phil’s Affordable Barra Fishing Charters will all pick you up from Darwin.

Afternoon

Work the nearby points and exposed reefs. Huge jewfish turn up less than 2km offshore, barra patrol the coastline, and blue salmon show up on the run of a big tide. Head further out for coral trout, red emperor and cobia (and maybe a fight with an aggressive Spanish mackerel).

Evening

Finish the day with a sunset drink at the Lodge of Dundee or Skippers at Dundee, before heading back to Darwin for the night.

Save the wildest water for last. The Tiwi Islands (Bathurst and Melville Islands) sit about 80km north of Darwin, reachable by charter flight, making them a doable day trip, even on a long weekend.

This is Aboriginal-owned land, so you’ll need a permit before you travel, arranged through the Tiwi Land Council. Book well ahead for this one as flights and permits need lead time.

Morning

Take a 30-minute, early morning flight with Tiwi Island Adventures or Alure Fishing Charters NT. A truly remote wilderness, few visitors ever make it out here. Evening

Fly back into Darwin and settle in for an evening the locals at the Darwin Sailing Club or Darwin Ski Club. Order a laid-back meal from the bistro, grab a drink from the bar and enjoy front-row seats to your final Top End sunset.
