Camping 101
Develop the ability to erect a tent without breaking a sweat thanks to Camping 101, guaranteed to school you in the art of all things outdoorsy. Since camping is a favourite pastime of the locals, this is one skill you can’t afford to live without. Learn to declutter, disconnect from your gadgets (at least briefly) and reconnect with Mother Nature at her most majestic. As a camping expert, you’ll soon know which sites need to be booked in advance, which have the best barbecues, fire pits and toilets, whether you need a permit and any costs involved.
You’ll quickly become proficient in the best spots for camping, from Darwin (including Litchfield and Kakadu) and Katherine to Tennant Creek, Alice Springs and Uluru. As well as the ability to wield flimsy nylon and polyester structures (aka tents) with aplomb in a range of weather conditions, you’ll develop other invaluable life skills. For example, the ability to rustle up snags (sausages) and beans in the wild without setting yourself on fire, what constitutes the perfect cup of bush tea, how to wield nails, a hammer and sand bags effectively, and acing the etiquette of camping, ensuring you make new mates wherever you go.
