The site comprises refurbished steel-frame and corrugated galvanised clad buildings forming a museum of history and culture at the Community.
The museum opened on the 2 June 1993 and has continued to expand and increase its collection ever since.
The Museum was an initiative of the staff of the Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic School in cooperation with the Tiwi of Nguiu. The display preparation and installation was undertaken by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) through their Regional Museums Programme. Funding has come from the NT Government through the Heritage grants-in-aid Programme and some displays were funded by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).
