Garma Festival

Garma is Australia's premier Indigenous event, a celebration of the cultural, artistic and ceremonial traditions of the Yolngu people.

Over 4 days in remote Arnhem Land, 2500 guests from across the nation are immersed in the rich cultural heritage of their Yolngu hosts, experiencing traditional miny'tji (art), ancient story-telling, manikay (song), and bunggul (dance). The over-riding artistic and cultural mission of Garma is to provide a contemporary environment for the expression and presentation of traditional Yolngu knowledge systems and customs, and share these practices with our guests in an authentic Yolngu setting. The event has a strong artistic component, showcasing work from new and established regional artists and musicians, including a spectacular open-air art gallery which lights up the night. In addition to a comprehensive program of cultural workshops and activities, Garma also hosts a Key Forum policy conference for discussion and debate on issues affecting Indigenous Australians. Garma exposes its audience to a slice of Australian life not seen outside of remote communities, and guests often describe it as a life-altering experience.
