Bucket of Garnet Bearing Gravel or Fossick in Garnet Gully

Gem fossicking is a fun and exciting outback experience. During the season, 1st March to 31st October, those with time restraints or if tours are fully booked, fossicking in relative comfort at Gemtree can be undertaken by purchasing a bucket full of garnet bearing gravel (you are almost certain to find some gems).

Your stones can be assessed by a guide at designated times and you may like to have some cut and polished or set into jewellery.

For children, it is great fun to buy a bucket and search for a treasure trove of minerals in Garnet Gully. You should find some interesting mineral specimens from the Harts Range region to add to your collection. Stones collected in Garnet Gully will not be sorted.

Buckets of garnet bearing gravel cost AUD30.00 and can be shared by up to four people satisfactorily. Empty buckets to be filled from Garnet Gully cost AUD5.00 per bucket .

    Local History Tour

Your host, Cameron Chalmers, will lead the four-wheel drive tagalong tour departing at 8am.

Travel past the breathtaking Harts Ranges and learn about the mica miners who discovered many of the beautiful minerals found in the area last century. Travelling northwards along the Binns Track, detour past the Harts Range Racecourse and Aboriginal Community, Atitjere, before taking time to briefly explore the Box Hole Meteorite Crater.

The track takes you on through MacDonald Downs past the original Chalmers family homestead built in 1931 and on to the Mac and Rose Chalmers Conservation Reserve, where Cameron's parents are buried. There will be time to walk or climb here at Tower Rock before the final stage of the tour to the Mt Swan Aboriginal Art Gallery and cafe, where you can enjoy coffee and cake, before returning to Gemtree.

Bring a packed lunch to enjoy along the way on a shady creek bank.
