'A Smoke Social' is an immersive, site-specific theatre production commemorating 100 years since the end of World War One. 'A Smoke Social', written by Sandra Thibodeaux and directed by Alex Galeazzi, will be staged in the Darwin Town Hall Ruins - the original venue of 'smoke socials' that were parties held to farewell enlisting soldiers. These parties featured Vaudeville routines, songs, toasts, comedy skits and music ensembles. Our play re-creates a ‘smoke social’, inviting audiences to participate as they did a hundred years ago.
Parallel to this, we travel to the Palestinian front where two brothers have been split off from their regiment. A love affair and a troubled past create complications as the brothers wonder if they'll ever get home. These two worlds of Darwin and Palestine interweave throughout the play until finally colliding in a battle for truth.
'A Smoke Social', presented by Brown's Mart Productions, features a stellar music ensemble, conducted by Netanela Mizrahi. Cast includes Shaka Cook, Stevie Kyriacou, Merrilee Mills, Kyle Walmsley and Yoris Wilson. The WWI period is being recreated by set designer Charles Davis and lighting designer Philip Lethlean, with costumes by Arnavaz Lindsay. Don't miss this unique, historical moment of Darwin theatre.
