The Andrew Gurruwiwi Band

Parrtjima | Music | The Andrew Gurruwiwi Band

A high-energy, seven-piece funk and reggae band, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band honed their sound on the beach at Birrtjimi and in the dirt of Yirrkala, in north-east Arnhem Land.

The band’s funk jams are a mix of Yolngu Matha and English. It’s Yolngu Funk at its finest.

Just like King Stingray and Baker Boy before them, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band is the next hot musical act to burst out of Arnhem Land. Led by Andrew Gurruwiwi - a shy-but-extravagant, blind, keytar-wielding Yolngu elder with a passion to make people dance while sharing his culture - the band boasts a truly fresh sound.

Their debut single, Gatjumak, which means ‘Go for it’ and was spawned out of the absolute mayhem of Arnhem Land community festivals, is explosive and sure to erupt into fierce dancing and craziness on the dirt dancefloor at Parrtjima in 2023.

Venue: Gathering Ground, Parrtjima Hub, Desert Park

Entry to music performances will be on a first-come, first-served basis so make sure you arrive early.
