Discover a real desert oasis, weave through giant rock formations, and learn about the region's ancient and spiritual history. Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon in the Watarrka National Park, host a range of short walking options, complete with informative displays and expert local guides.

Base camp

Uluru's national and international popularity has inspired a series of informative and exciting short walking trails. The 9.4 kilometre base walk takes an average of 3.5 hours and escapes the crowds for a gentle exploration of the region's acacia woodlands and grassed claypans. The lush landscapes at the base of the rock surprise many, as do the various waterways and soaks.

The Lungkata Walk brings to life Kuniya Tjukurpa – the great battle between Kuniya (woman python) and Liru (poisonous snake man), before ending up at a sacred waterhole. The Kuniya Walk showcases traditional rock art by the Anangu people.

Short and sweet

Make your way to some of the best views in the Red Centre, in and around the mighty rock domes of Kata Tjuta. Just one kilometre from the carpark is Karu Lookout, on the Valley of the Winds Walk (3 hours), offering sweeping views of the desert plains. The Kata Tjuta dune viewing area gives visitors a magnificent panoramic view of the famous site and is just a half-hour walk in from the road.

Grand canyons

Explore the sheer rock faces and lush sheltered valleys of the Watarrka National Park, an important conservation area that's home to over 600 species of plants and many native animals. Walkers can access the 22 kilometre Giles Track at various points for shorter options.

Tackle the Kings Canyon Rim Walk for spectacular views and lush waterholes, or take a journey back in time with the informative displays along the Kathleen Springs and Kings Creek walks, home to important Aboriginal sites and Dreamtime stories.
