Walking, Leliyn (Edith Falls), Nitmiluk National Park, Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia

You don't have to tackle a multiday trek or camp overnight to hit the trails in Katherine. Head out for a couple of hours or for the full day, and return in time for dinner having experienced the exhilaration of the tropical outback terrain.

Time to explore

A couple of hours is enough to absorb some stunning Katherine Gorge scenery from the Barrawei and Windolf Walk lookouts in Nitmiluk National Park. A half-day hike will have you clambering over dark volcanic rocks and taking a dip under the falls at Northern Rockhole or watching the brilliant fluttering of tiny wings in Butterfly Gorge. Choose to walk the 2.6km rocky loop from popular Leliyn (Edith Falls), the final stop on the Jatbula Trail, or dig deeper on the 8.6km return trek to tranquil Sweetwater Pool.

An extraordinary landscape

The region's national parks and conservation areas are abuzz with diverse wildlife. If you're lucky, the call of cockatoos and the thump of wallabies will accompany your stride. Spot diverse birdlife at Caranbirini Conservation Reserve on the 2km Barrawullu Loop. Marvel at the 25m-high sandstone spires known as 'Lost City' formations. The 5km Jagududgu Loop takes in all the reserve’s habitats and offers fantastic views of the landscape.

Relaxation is the key

Elsey National Park is just perfect for bushwalking. When you need a break, relax in the warm crystal waters of Korowan/Mataranka Falls and Bitter Springs thermal pools. Explore historic sites and cast a line into the serene Roper River to catch a fish for lunch. Flora River Nature Park rewards hikers with exceptional tufa formations that create natural dams across the river.

Indigenous heritage

Discover Aboriginal rock art and learn about local history and culture as you walk. Take the Nawulbinbin Walk in Gregory National Park or explore the Keep River National Park, which falls within Aboriginal lands.
