More information

The tropical waters of the Northern Territory are home to some of the best sailing spots in Australia. Cruise over vivid blue waters, witness incredible sunsets and experience some truly inspiring destinations.

Around the harbour

Darwin Harbour is a focal point of Northern Territory sailing. Explore the mangrove-lined waterways of this tropical estuary teeming with fish, crocodiles, turtles, and the occasional dugong or snub fin dolphin.

A day on the Darwin Harbour is more than just sailing. Local tour operators offer a range of day trips. Learn the ropes by becoming one of the crew or simply sit back and enjoy a glass of wine as you drift through the beautiful landscapes of this pristine environment.

Islands and reefs

A short sail from Darwin is the Bynoe Harbour Marine Park, a favourite of locals and visitors alike. The many small islands and dry reefs of Bynoe make it ideal for fishing and exploring.

Along the stunning coastline north of Darwin are the remote beaches of the Melville and Bathurst Islands (Tiwi Islands) and the Cobourg Peninsula. Here you'll find a wide variety of overnight sailing tours on offer.

Discover the rich culture and art of the Tiwi Islands when you step ashore and meet the locals. Eat real 'bush tucker', visit the local school, or learn Tiwi painting techniques at the Munupi Arts and Crafts Centre. Make time to go on an Aboriginal cultural tour and visit historical sites from the early European settlement.

The Cobourg Peninsula is a two-day sail from Darwin and is home to some of the best reef and mangrove fishing in the world. Barramundi, barracuda and queen fish are just some of the species jumping out of the water in this untouched marine environment.
