Take a heritage walk and explore the WWII bombing of Darwin, Cyclone Tracy and the Overland Telegraph Line. Experience the two-hour Darwin Culture walk led by an Aboriginal Larrakia guide, providing an indigenous interpretation of the city. Stroll from the Esplanade to Lameroo Beach while learning about ancient traditions along the way.

The East Point Reserve has a good scenic path that overlooks Beagle Gulf, and has the bonus of local wallabies. Other scenic walks include Charles Darwin National Park, 4km southeast of Darwin, with extensive walking trails that visit WWII bunkers. Want more? Lake Bennett and nearby nature parks like Howard Springs, Berry Springs and Holmes Jungle all make for excellent walks.

Mary River

Nature lovers and twitchers must visit Mary River National Park. Stroll along boardwalks to billabongs and viewing platforms to enjoy excellent views of local birdlife and crocodiles. Other short walks in the park include a trail through the lowland woodland savannah of Brian Creek Monsoon Forest and the walk to the Couzens Lookout.

Litchfield National Park and the Tiwi Islands

Litchfield National Park is another great option. Better known for longer hikes, there's also some day walks including the track to Wangi Falls for a dip in its cool waters.

Sign up for a cultural walk in the Tiwi Islands and enjoy a unique opportunity to get off the beaten track and encounter one of the world's oldest cultures. Visit local waterholes and other natural sights on Bathurst Island and be given a demonstration of the traditional customs of the Tiwi people.
