Did you know Alice Springs is the starting point for one of the world's great walking trails? The Larapinta Trail was voted by National Geographic as one of the top 20 trekking experiences to be had on the planet.

On your way

Start the journey and experience myriad local wildlife and almost 600 species of rare flora. If that's not inviting enough, how about warm afternoons spent swimming in lush and remote watering holes? At the end of a long day on the trail, stretch out and drift off beneath an awe-inspiring night sky.

The famous route traverses the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder, covering a lengthy 223 kilometres. Although designed for experienced walkers, less experienced walkers may select different starting points to vary the difficulty and length of their experience.

View from the top

On your trek you will take in some of this region's finest views, from Simpsons Gap and the rugged Standley Chasm through to Ormiston Gorge and the mighty Finke River. Spend the days walking through comet-impact craters and jumping across boulders dwarfed by surrounding cliffs before retiring beside a campfire on the banks of the Finke River.

Finish your journey by climbing Mount Sonder – known as the pregnant lady by the local Anangu Aboriginal people – one of the highest peaks west of the Great Dividing Range. The views here are a spectacular reward for the intrepid hiker.

Choose your own adventure

Multiple four-wheel-drive access points exist if you wish to arrange your own itinerary or shorten your trek. Alternative routes cater for various fitness levels and water supplies are located along the length of the track. Guided walking tours, food drops and transfers can also be arranged.
